When inspiration hits local musician Anna Goldsmith, it consumes her until she puts pen to paper and, eventually, vocals to recording.

The 16-year-old former Newmarket resident, who attended St. Nicholas Catholic Elementary School and Pickering College before moving to Stroud, has known for much of her young life what she wants to do.

When Goldsmith was just nine years old, she was taking piano lessons and one day in the room next door to her lessons, she heard young singers taking lessons and was inspired.

Goldsmith begged her mother to sign her up for singing lessons after that and she says it was like fate with the way both her piano and singing lessons aligned.

As she improved with her singing lessons, she fell deeper into love with it and it motivated her to begin to perform at local recitals.

In 2021, Goldsmith began writing and performing her own music and with the support and guidance of piano coach Margot Hamilton and singing coaches Lorraine Lawson and Irina Bobrow.

“They really helped me push through some of the hard times and helped me find my sound,” said Goldsmith. “It helped a lot with my confidence.”

Having released four original songs, Goldsmith has been performing local gigs in Toronto, York Region, Simcoe County, and surrounding areas for the past year.

Through playing shows and taking lessons, Goldsmith has met many musicians that have become friends and says it’s been so energizing to see others find success in the world of music. It’s one of the biggest reasons she’s chasing her dreams.

“I feel inspired that I can do those things, too, and I want to inspire other people,” she said.

Goldsmith’s biggest influence is Lady Gaga because she models her message after her. She says it’s all about being yourself and being confident no matter what the rest of the world is telling you.

“I think that’s really important,” she said. “I try to express that in my music.”

While Goldsmith says Gaga is her biggest influence in terms of her message, she points to Paramore and Guns N’ Roses as the bands that have impacted her sound the most.

She says that influence has been key in writing her own music, which can be a difficult process. For Goldsmith, it’s all about taking advantage of when she feels the inspiration to write, which isn’t always at the most convenient time.

“Sometimes it’ll be the middle of the night, but I have such a good idea that I can’t not do it,” she said. “It hits me and I just have to write it out.”

Goldsmith is releasing her first song of 2024, and fifth original, on Jan. 12, an uplifting pop punk anthem called Let Love Go.

She’s extra excited about this release because it’s a little different lyrically than her past singles. With most of her songs being positive, and recognizing that not everything is happy all the time, this song touches more on the hard times and overcoming them.

“I think it’s really relatable and will let me connect with my audience even more,” she said. “The thing I love most about doing music is being able to connect with the audience. It’s empowering.”

Going forward, Goldsmith says she really sees herself making a career out of music and all she wants in life is to be a performer.

“I just want to perform for more and more people while expanding my audience,” she said. “My goal is to perform on stadium stages.”
